Cap and Gown of Professor Earl Vance, 1928–1974

Cap and Gown of Professor Earl Vance, 1928-1974

Donated by Marthine Vance Woodward

Accession No. HP-2007-004

He was an exceptional teacher and one of the most challenging. He forced students to think (usually for the first time) about generalities they had accepted unthinkingly all their lives. He clashed with Doak Campbell from the get-go and was forced to retire when Campbell eliminated journalism classes from the curriculum. Another clash was Vance's refusal to even start working toward a doctorate. He was MISTER Vance and loved it.
